Selecting Your Stylist
Location
You want to select a stylist who works close to you. Some of the worse problems I see (and hear about) are people who have their extensions done while they are on vacation. What did the stylist tell them? It will stay in for 6 months, etc. What a mess to clean-up! What problems are created when they leave hair attached for a long time. If it was done with an adhesive ... what type? How to remove them?
What happens when it is time to have them re-done?
Extensions need to be redone every 4 to 8 weeks. You need to be close enough to your stylist so that you can have regular maintenance.
Training and Skills
We believe that one attachment method is not appropriate for all clients. We suggest you ask what attachment methods the stylist does and where they took their training. If you have read through this section of our Website you will have an idea of some of the more common attachment methods.
Some salons make a "big deal" out of their "special" attachment method. "Won't ruin your hair ..." etc., etc., etc. In our Information & Education section you can read about Adhesives - Truths & Myths. Just because someone gives you a "sales pitch" does not mean they are or are not honest. I think a good question to ask is "How often do you think the Extensions should be redone?"
If the answer is 4 to 8 weeks or there about ... then you know that you are talking to someone who is concerned about the safety of your own hair ... not just is a "sales pitch" to get your business.

Consultations
It is very important to have a consultation with your prospective client. Because you are booking time with the stylist, usually there is a consultation fee. The amount will vary. $50.00 is kind of an average fee. Sometimes the consultation fee is applied to services (and/or products).
A consultation is the time that you and the stylist will use to get to know each other. The stylist's objective is to identify what you are looking for in your hair style and what attachment method will be the most one appropriate for you.
For you, the consultation time will allow you to learn what the stylist can do and for you to get a "gut feeling" about the person. It is important that both of you have a positive and trusting feeling about each other. Hair Extension Services require a team ... you and the stylist.

Encouraging Your Regular Stylist
Some people encourage their regular stylist to learn how to do Hair Addition Services ... and do their hair. We have Books, DVDs, Kits and Hands-On Workshops that can provide your stylist with all the training needed.

Pictures, Prices and Planing
Ask the stylist if there are pictures of any of their clients available to look at. Towards the end of the consultation, the stylist will be able to give you an idea of what she/he recommends in attachment method, length of hair, color(s) of hair, etc. There are couple of prices you'll want to know ... how much for the 1st time and how much for maintenance ... how often. Some people like fresh hair every time. Others want to be able to re-use the hair. All these issues need to be discussed during your consultation.
Planning when you will have your additions done relative to any hair coloring / curling / straightening you may also have done to your own hair is necessary. Planning and considering the time it will require you to take care of your hair at home. As an example, we do not recommend that a new mother get semi-permanently attached Extensions. A new baby and the extra hair-care time required usually don't work out. For the new mother - Clip-In Extensions are better. To have hair when she goes out ... not all the time.
