Hair
is not a living tissue. However, the root that produces it is. The root
is encased in a follicle in a small indentation in the outer skin layer.

The
4 steps of the growth cycle are: 1.
Growing, 2. Resting, 3. Falling Out and 4. Replacing. 1 - Growing Cycle The hair on your head grows about 1/2" per month. This varies between races, sexes and age. As an example, scalp hair grows faster between the ages of 15 to 30 and diminishes between the ages of 30 to 50. Women grow hair faster than men. Asian and Latin women grow hair faster than anyone else. The "life" of a single hair can range from 2 years to 6 years before it is replaced with a new hair. 2 - Resting Cycle At the end of the growth cycle, the follicle begins to shrink. This period lasts for about 2 weeks. Then for several months the hair stops growing altogether and the follicle shrinks around the end of the hair shaft. This is called the telogen or final phase - the growth of the hair strand stops as the follicle shrinks. 3 - Falling Out Cycle Everyone sheds hair daily. The estimates run from 50 hairs to 100 hairs per day. The hair comes out when you shampoo, comb or brush it. 4 - Replacing Cycle Replacing the hair that has fallen out is a natural process. A new hair is formed by cell division at the root of the hair around the papilla. It begins growing before the old hair falls out. |
